How DID Obama Get All Those Twitter Followers?
Nothing breeds a following like a following, this is the same in real life as in Twitter. An interesting way to “create” a following was exposed by Michael Gray on his SEO Blog in a post about increasing your Twitter followers. Michael points out, “When you create a new profile on twitter, and the account is banned, twitter’s system does not remove it from the following count of others.” Conceivably you could create many accounts have them all follow one account and let them get banned, without fear of it being a wasted effort. Why would someone do this? People tend to follow and gain trust in someone that has a profile with a multitude of followers already. I don’t suggest someone do this but simply to expose that it CAN be done, nor would I accuse the Obama Campaign of doing this, although “creating” a following is instrumental in a political campaign. As of this posting Obama has over 149,000 following him but only 144,000 followers on Twitter – so there could have been 5,000 created and then banned “followers”.
